Land of Tomorrow:  Postwar Fiction and the Crisis of American Liberalism (Oxford UP, 2018) shows that many of the most influential writers, critics, and intellectuals of the postwar decades recast social-democratic politics as enfeebling, alienating, and even tyrannical. I argue that novelists like Vladimir Nabokov, Patricia Highsmith, and Ralph Ellison gave cultural prestige to a spectrum of political sensibilities that turned against the legacy of reform established during the New Deal era.
